Olive Oil Soap

At the beginning of this season, I realized that I had just about run out of those little pre-packaged hotel soaps. My pack of them had lasted five years. To be honest, I was never happy with them. They looked, well, like pre-packaged hotel soaps. I have other bath items, like shampoo and shower gel, which are spa products that I love (although I hate all the packaging - too much plastic). But the soaps were nothing special. So I decided to take a different tack.

I bought bulk olive oil soap, made in Marsailles of 72% olive oil. I am breaking the blocks down into small pieces and wrapping them in unbleached paper and raffia. A solution that fits our concept. A beautiful product, and a lovely, pure touch.

Diana, you've turned a bar of soap into an art statement!

It's good stuff that Savon de Marseille. I read the 'ingredients' in one of the usual brand soaps and concluded that it was tantamount to bathing in chemical soap, not so with your stuff.

Lovely photo.

Sometimes I think we live parallel lives. A month ago I bought olive oil soap in Marseille, for your same reasons. That soap got me thinking about making my own, but I haven't figured out the mold issue. As soon as I do, I'll give it a go.

In Pisa they have just opened a store where you can buy locally made soap. They have some really nice things!

This is a lovely idea - but I will not be surprised at all when you start making your own!

I have the innermost part of a gigantic olive oil soap bar we bought in Provence in 1996. When I smell it I am back there looking out of the window. Your little blue soap, until it's ultimate demise, performed the same function. One inhale and I was back looking out the window of the beautiful green tiled bath. Smell memory is the best ; it doesn't seem to distort or forget. Claudia

Diana, your idea of packaging the soaps is wonderful. I would love to have those. Now, I would love to recommend a soap for you. It is made in the USA Hamptons and is called Antonia's Flowers. The top note is freesia and Antonia has an extensive line of parfums, lotions. I have been using it for years and is the only scent I use. The soap is beautiful.

These little bundles look very elegant. I've never tried olive oil soap before. Will have to buy some when I'm in der Altstadt tomorrow. Thanks for the idea. :-)
