Her name is Gioia (Joy), I guess her to be about six months old and she belongs, unfortunately, to people who don't take good care of her. She is the sweetest Terrier mix puppy you could imagine, all love and kissy face and smiles-- but is hungry all the time and never allowed inside -- and they yell at her. We can hear them yelling at her (can you imagine yelling at a puppy who just wants you to love her?). Which breaks my heart. One day I put her under my jacket and she proceeded to fall asleep - immediately. She hangs out up here with Max and me most days, where she gets all the loving and treats we can give her. I would take her in a heartbeat, but don't want "problemi" with these particular neighbors. Gioia is a little confused -- where is her real home? Their property joins ours on one side so she runs back and forth. I am a little bit confused myself as to what to do, so we just try to help her when we can.
Sigh.
But at least she has us to come to when the chips are down, right?

That is a crazy-sad story, but Gioia is lucky to have such wonderful neighbors!
My parents' next-door neighbors (one of the homes with the chickens) has the sweetest dog ever, and her "living quarters" are this little fenced-in area with stones that was used by prior owners as the place to store outdoor toys and sports equipment, and the garage. She's extremely athletic and would keep jumping out of the outdoor enclosure (gee, wonder why?) and run loose. She's one of Murphy's pals, and now that they've added chicken wire to make a higher enclosure, she'll just sit outside, whimpering whenever Murphy's out. He'll start whimpering too, and it's utterly heartbreaking to watch. :-(
My parents have been outraged for a while, but there are also "problemi" because they are close friends to the husband's parents (they lived there first, and then sold the house to the son and his wife). So they've been talking to them about it albeit in a gentle way, so I think she's allowed inside sometimes now.
Why the f*** do people adopt/buy dogs if they don't want to handle ALL of the ups and downs that come along with them? It boggles my mind.
And to end this comment with some lightness, a happy story of adoption: one of my old bosses adopted a boxer/pitbull mix who had been rescued, roaming the streets of Queens after somehow escaping a dog-fighting ring, and she is the sweetest sweet pea you'll ever meet. He brought her into the office one Friday and was super-friendly--it was one of the rare glimpses we got of him being a fun, normal human being.
so sad. Why do these kind of people get dogs???? I'm so glad she at least has you all to come to as often as she can.
What a sweet puppy!
I am so happy for Max!
Lucy's a little jealous but also gentle-hearted. She says keep the puppy! xo
Just keep her. Perhaps they won't notice.
Maybe you can tell them you are looking for a companion for Max, they get along and could you keep him? This is so sad.
I just don't understand people who mistreat animals, give them away to someone who wants them and be done with it.
At least Gioia has a refuge and friend to turn to when needed.
I agree with M.A.Diva, casually let them know you'd love to have her for Max's friend if they ever want to get rid of her. Plant the seed and see if it grows.
Good luck.
